My newest project is FINALLY coming together, it’s a fantasy-mystery about a practitioner of stigmatized healing magic who gets framed for murder and the noble who stands up to champion her defense
The healing magic is stigmatized because it is basically magical surgery, it’s long and slow and gory— they call it flesh smithing.
Also when I say ‘champion’, I mean in the ‘someone who fights in your place in a duel’ sense!
There’s a trial by combat you can call on, but you aren’t allowed to use your own magic— you have to channel it through somebody else, who is ritualistically binding themselves to you for life in order to allow this. It can’t be a family member or anyone with your magic type, but is always someone who has enough faith in your innocence to risk their life on it. Basically, you need a VERY committed character reference.
The protagonist has Noah, a mage she went to school with. They were not friends, but she helped him once, and he’s carried that act of kindness with him for a LONG time. Everyone is shocked when he volunteers.
